Are the seven churches of Revelation a prophecy of seven church ages?
They were seven real churches that received seven real letters (Rev 1:11). Many have also read them, in the order Christ gives, as an outline of seven ages of church history, from Ephesus leaving its first love to Laodicea, the lukewarm church of the last days: "because thou art lukewarm... I will spue thee out of my mouth" (Rev 3:16). The reading is a pattern, not a stated claim of the text, but the order and the character fit.
What the text states
Christ names seven literal churches and writes each a letter (Rev 1:11; chapters 2 and 3). Every letter is addressed to a first-century congregation and applies to any church in any age that matches it. That is the plain reading, and it is always true.
The answer
Alongside the plain reading, there is a long-held pattern: the seven, in the exact order Christ gives them, trace the unfolding story of the church from the apostles to the end.
Ephesus, "thou hast left thy first love" (Rev 2:4), the apostolic church cooling. Smyrna, "be thou faithful unto death" (Rev 2:10), the age of the martyrs. Pergamos, dwelling "even where Satan’s seat is" (Rev 2:13), the church settled into the world's capital. Thyatira, suffering "that woman Jezebel" (Rev 2:20), false teaching entrenched. Sardis, "a name that thou livest, and art dead" (Rev 3:1), a reforming church with life mostly in name. Philadelphia, "I have set before thee an open door" (Rev 3:8), the faithful, missionary church. And Laodicea, "rich, and increased with goods" yet "lukewarm" (Rev 3:17, 16), the comfortable, self-satisfied church of the last days, the one He warns He will "spue... out."
Then the church is not seen on earth again. After the letters, John hears, "Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter" (Rev 4:1), and from that point the story is in heaven while the earth passes through the tribulation. Those who hold the pre-tribulational return read that call as the church's.
What this does not prove
The text does not label these as ages, and they were real letters to real churches first. The church-ages reading is a pattern many have seen in the order, not a claim Revelation makes in words. Held loosely it is a striking fit; pressed too hard it says more than the text says. The letters' first and surest use is the one Christ gave them: a living word to His churches, true in every age at once.
